FLORENCE APIGO

BABY

Florence had a baby boy- Reymart (he was 6 months old in the photo)

Born in Oct 2011

FAMILY HISTORY

This is Florence’s 7th child

Her husband works in Divisoria in a shop as delivery boy

That is a fairly low wage

PREGNANCY AND BIRTH

Florence wanted a ligation so she went to Fabella

She had all checkups and ultrasounds

She had a good pregnancy

She had an uneventful delivery

POST-NATAL

She breastfed Reymart for 1 month

She then said she ran out of milk and he is now on a good brand formula

However we still spoke to her about the fact that she could have built up her milk supply by more regular feeding, and rest etc

Why do we do that?

Because somewhere down the track she may be able to teach and suggest that to someone else!

There is only an EXTREMELY small percent of the population who CANNOT produce enough milk to feed their baby

This “concept” or “lack of education” is not just a problem in developing nations but here in Australia too!

Nearly all mothers (98%) can make more than enough milk for their baby (or babies!).1 Indeed, having too much breastmilk is common. If a mother has a low milk supply it is usually because her baby is not feeding often enough. Breastfeeding Association Breastfeeding Fact or Fiction

However in Baseco the risk of using Infant formula is far greater….dirty bottles, dirty water, are just the beginning of the issues formula fed babies face. let alone the increased risk of disease.

FAMILY PLANNING

For some reason she did not receive a ligation but they inserted an IUD for time being she will go back for one later

COMMENTS

This is one of the few women who has not persisted with Breastfeeding

It is one thing we are fairly strict with as the alternatives are not good

BELINDA CASTRO

BABY

Belinda had a baby boy- Prince Richard he is 6 weeks old in the photo (Born Feb 2012)

FAMILY HISTORY

This is Belinda’s third baby

She has found it very hard to concieve babies and has had big gaps between them

Her oldest girl Abby is about 11 years old

PREGNANCY AND BIRTH

Belinda attended the GAT Andres Hospital which is in Tondo very close to Baseco for all of her tests and ultrasounds

Some women prefer The Gat because people can visit you once the baby is delivered, in Fabella this is not possible (no visitors)

She had two ultrasounds to check her dates

She had a good delivery and there were no problems

POST-NATAL

The baby is fully breastfed

She is attending the Baseco Clinic for the baby’s checkups and immunisations

Belinda has had 2 urine infections since the baby’s birth so has been on two courses of anti biotics

The baby has since had thrush, but she has been to the doctors for cream etc

COMMENTS

Belinda is a leader with Jn14:12

She lives very near Block 15 church and runs many of the meeting there with the other leaders

She has a very sweet and gentle spirit and God is very real in her life

She is involved with BBBabies in many ways, not only is she a recipient of sponsorship but she helps run a Bible study nearby to Block 15 which is made up of almost entirely BBB mums

She is also part of our new  Mentoring Programme we are piloting in Baseco

Belinda is the teenage “mums to be” adopted mum.

She will be mentoring and being a Mother to the Mother!

MARILYN AGUILAR

BABY

Baby Boy – Mark Christian 5months old in photo (Born Nov 2011)

FAMILY HISTORY

This is Marilyn’s 9th child!

Her husband is a pedicab driver who earns only a couple of  Australian dollars daily.

She was anxious to stop having any more children

PREGNANCY AND BIRTH

In order to have a tubal ligation she needed to go to Fabella Hospital

She attended all checkups there

She had all tests and scans there

It was a good pregnancy

She did attend Fabella for her birth and it was a successful birth with no problems.

She did have a ligation before she left Fabella

POST-NATAL

Marilyn was one of the few mothers who did not breastfeed

Not for a personal reason but purely medical

She had inverted nipples

She showed me and they were seriously inverted

FAMILY PLANNING

Marilyn was a grateful recipient of a tubal ligation

Her baby days are over

The baby is completely immunised

COMMENTS

Marilyn was particularly grateful for BBB

She tearfully thanked me for the sponsorship and her subsequent ligation

To her it represented the end of a long baby bearing era

The extreme financial hardship that she faced each time a baby was born was at an end.

She was one of the few that thanked me and her sponsors

It was special.

Mother and baby are very happy and healthy

Read about the battle that the poor women like Marilyn face daily in Manila

MARCIALUTA EBANO

BABY

Marcialota had a baby girl- Jasmine Nicole (she was 3 months old in the photo)

Born in Jan 2012

FAMILY HISTORY

This is her 6th child

Her husband is a construction worker or builder

PREGNANCY AND BIRTH

Marciolota wanted to go to Manila’s newest baby hospital Mother and Child

She actually went to Fabella as well for care

She reported that is was very good there

She had all of her testing and ultrasounds there

She had a good pregnancy

She delivered there as well and had a good birth with no complications

POSTNATAL

She is fully breastfeeding

The baby is in the middle of immunisations at the moment and she has had her checkups

FAMILY PLANNING

Marciolota actually does want anymore children but her husband does not agree with ligation

This is a conversation we have with many of our women

Sometime it is their mothers and mother in laws also

They equate ligation with prostitution so refuse to allow their wives/daughters to do the proceedure

At this moment she has had an IUD inserted

COMMENTS

Little Jasmine was quite sick when we saw her

I encouraged her mother to take her to the doctors as her breathing with very laboured

In Baseco life can be held onto by a thread,

have had an experience where a baby who looked fat and healthy had some asthmatic problems, but I had no idea how serious as the baby was sleeping when I held her…..however by the next morning she had died

We gave Marcialota money to go to the doctors and prayed for her and pray that she went

You can never tell where a sickness will lead, we always err on the side of careful!

You can read about this tragic baby’s story here on my personal blog Aletheia

FAMILY PLANNING

Grace is currently taking the pill, she did want a ligation but also has twins and they are only 1 year and 7 months so she finds it extremely hard to get out and also there is noone to help look after the other children. MARY-JANE COTANDA

BABY

Mary-Jane had a little girl- Yrene Aubrey 2 months old in the photo (born Jan 2012)

FAMILY HISTORY

This is her 6th child

Her husband is a Tri-cycle driver, he has a very low income for this many children

PREGNANCY AND BIRTH

Mary-Jane wanted to have the baby at  Fabella for a ligation must have one check up there so she could ligate

However she had all other checkups at The Gat

All tests and ultrasounds were fine she had a good pregnancy

She delivered at the Gat because the baby was coming too quickly and she could not make it the Fabella which is farther away

She had a good birth with no problems

POST-NATAL

The baby is totally breastfed

She is going to the Baseco Health Centre for all checkups

She has started her immunisations

Baby and mother are well and happy

FAMILY PLANNING

Mary-Jane was intending to have a ligation, however her mother died so she had to cancel the appointment.

She is on the pill at the moment, but will ligate at a later date

We will still sponsor this ligation as well

CHRISTINA REMPONE

I was unable to meet Christina myself as she was out of  Baseco

But Mark had interviewed her prior to the birth of her baby

image

This is Christina Remponi, one our newest mums in BBB. 29, 3 children, has chosen to ligate after this birth.

Its is such a relief for some of these woman to be able to stop having babies. There is  so much tradition and wrong info amongst the poor. A man here would often think “no more babies means no more intimacy…so he will always say NO”. But the truth is, a ligation often enriches the whole relationship, because neither party has to worry about the unplanned pregnancy, which at times is such an incredible burden for everyone in the family.

This program blesses the whole family.

PELNA YLANG

BABY

Pelna had a baby boy- Cyrus he was 1 month old in the photo (Born in Feb 2012)

FAMILY HISTORY

This is Pelna’s 3rd child

Her husband is a Delivery Boy in Divasoria, which is a very low wage

PREGNANCY AND BIRTH

She wanted to go to the new hospital at Delpan called The Mother and Child

She had all of her checkups/testing and ultrasounds there she had no problems

She delivered there as well and had a good birth with no issues

POST-NATAL

Pelna is fully breastfeeding Cyrus

She is going for regular checkups with him to the Baseco Health Clinic

She has begun his immunisations as well

She did want to have a ligation but she is too young, in Manila you have to be over 25 years old, also she has a Lola (grandmother) who is totally against ligation she like many other older Phillipino women believe that once you receive a ligation it makes a women into a prostitute. This is a common and widespread belief in the nation.

So Pelna has decided that for the moment she will go to Likhaan for advice and direction on contraception.

The baby and mother are happy and healthy!

LANI BELARMINO

BABY

Baby boy Christian

2months old (Born Jan 12)

FAMILY HISTORY

Has 9 children  her oldest is 21 years

PREGNANCY AND BIRTH

Baby  was actually born at home with a Hilot

Lani expressed that she was scared to go to the hospital in the end

But she was desperate to get a ligation so she went to Fabella Hospital

for all testing and ultrasounds.

She had a trouble free pregnancy

It was fortunately a good birth.

POST-NATAL

The baby is totally breastfed

Immunisations are being done at the local health clinic

Baby is healthy

FAMILY PLANNING

Lani has had a tubal ligation at Fabella after the baby was born

She is extremely relieved to be not having any babies any more!

COMMENTS

Lani is just one of the thousands of women who prefer births at home.

This decision is based on many fears about the hospital and health system.

Some fears are justified, some are not!

Women can receive treatment in hospitals which is quite brutal by our standards, not necessarily in the area of medicine BUT in general.

There are many reasons for this but it would probably boil down to a statistical and numerical issue.

On a regular day Fabella  birth around 55 babies….that is huge every day of the year

Just by looking at this photo you could imagine the logistical nightmare these doctors and midwives face each day

But this prolific baby making machine is the result of contraception being outlawed for years!

See here for the full blog on Febella

ELIZABETH CORTEZ

Unfortunately I was not able to interview Elizabeth as she has left Baseco

Her notes indicate that her pregnancy went well.

Also she had a successful birth.

Any updates I will pass on as soon as possible

IRENE HUMAWAN

BABY

Irene had a baby boy- Elijah (Born on April 27th 2012)

Take a peep here at his picture

He was 2.5kg and fat and healthy!

FAMILY HISTORY

Irene is 28 years old and she has one other child Prince Gabriel (here you can read about his story from my first trip to Baseco)

It is through Irene’s birth with Prince I learnt much of how the “system” works in Manila, I went from hospital to hospital and spent some hours experiencing the pain and fear many women face alone in the world of birthing.

PREGNANCY AND BIRTH

Irene wanted to have the baby at The Gat Andres Hospital at Tondo

She had all of her testing and ultrasounds there

She had two ultrasounds as she was unsure of her dates

She had a good pregnancy with no problems

Took vitamins throughout the pregnancy

She delivered at the Gat with no problems

POST-NATAL

Irene had a good birth and she and the baby are well

Elijah will be fully breastfed as was Prince

The baby will have all of his check-ups at the The Gat and will continue at the Baseco Health Clinic

FAMILY PLANNING

Irene does want more children so she will not ligate at the moment

However she can see the value in letting her body recover and spacing her babies using a form of contraception probably supplied by Likhaan Family Planning Clinic

COMMENTS

Irene is one of Jn 14:12’s Leaders

She is also a key worker with Birthing Better Babies, she is the coordinator on the ground working closely with Pst Mark, Nany Christine and Pst Marivick

Women come to Irene and she distributes funds for transport, testing, also vitamin distribution and general advice

She also keeps accounts, notes and tabs on all of the women in the BBB Programme and reports weekly to the girls who record on the computers. they are a well oiled machine, extending their skills and thinking daily!

She is vital and we appreciate her immensely,

Obviously she is having some time off as she settles in with her sweet new baby boy Elijah.

We are so happy for her!
