A Nation Leaning Into Change

I was a little surprised but thrilled when I saw a  newspaper when I was in Manila in September this year.

The headlines were remarkable.

THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF NOT BREASTFEEDING
14100397_1256533631049905_5235851455606955350_n

From a country that allows Infant Formula advertisment to blazen boldly across their billboards and Televisions I was suitably impressed.

There were over 6 pages fully dedicated to Breasfeeding !

Also Philippine stars and VIPs supporting and advocating  breastfeeding both men and women!

Great links and advice, great images, even images showing breastfeeding TODDLERS.

I know God has His eye on the Philippines and I am thrilled that He is stiring people even the famous ones to embrace truth, education and Him!

There is a battle going on for the Children of this nation. I believe these are only prophetic steps in the right direction, it shows me that the Leaders and Influencers of the Nation are leaning into change, they also know it is up to them (Nationals) to bring true and lasting change NOT foreign missions and NGO’s the truth is change MUST eventually come from within.

Am I doing myself out of a job? Absolutely

My desire is not to be needed.

Kids Making a Difference

Sammy is only 5 going on 6 but is making a difference to the lives of 2 babies in the slum of Manila

She worked extremely hard making Chocolate Dipped Strawberries and sold them at a Fair in The Barossa Valley she raised enough for 2 births making a difference to 2 Mothers and Babies in The Philippines . Well done Sammy!

12376680_1165912860111983_7598115070365448551_n

Here are your 2 mums, one of them has had their baby and was sick in hospital so your sponsorship has blessed this family in a time of great need!

EVALYN CELEBRAN/ RADO

BACKGROUND
Evalyn lives in an area in Baseco called Gasungang. She has a partner husband who is a Labourer and they live with their Mother-In-Law.
She is 21 and this is her first baby

PREGNANCY AND BIRTH
She had a good pregnancy
All testing and scans good
Good birth

BABY
Baby boy Galvin was born on June 13th 2016
He was 9lb and healthy
He is having all immunisations
She breastfed the baby and now is working so the Mother-In-Law is caring for the baby so they are bottle and breastfeeding him.

MARY-JOY VILLAGONZALO/RELESO

BACKGROUND

Mary-Joy lives in a part of Baseco called Aplaya, this is very close to the sea and often floods, the area was recently underwater in a typhoon and the water was up to Pastora Marivic’s waist, when she visited the area the women were sitting on top of the rooves or on top of plastic boxes with their belongings in.

PREGNANCY AND BIRTH
As far as we know the pregnancy went well for Mary-Joy as we had limited conversation with her, but her pregnancy was fine.
This baby was actually born at Home (which is not ideal and not what we advocate but it does happen, but as soon as he was born they took him to the Baseco Health Centre who checked him and gave him injections and newborn screening. See Mark’s Blog for details HERE

BABY
Baby was born on the 4th June 2016
His name is Prince Kian
He was 9.8lb and very healthy
She was breastfeeding him
He then developed a serious Chest infection and was admitted into The Gat Andreas Hospital on the 29th of August with BPM (Bronchial Pneumonia)
We visited him in The Gat soon after that and he was getting better slowly.

The most important thing is that sponsorship allows these parents to buy medicine and travel to and fro to the hospital, that is extremely important as every single swab and injection costs in The Philippines. So without Sponsorship this baby and his family would have had a big struggle to pay.

Thanks Sammy for your sponsorship, you really really made a difference.
Love Aunty  Cath

Birth Highlights for Lighthouse

One of our most commited sponsors is Lighthouse Church in Melbourne,

Here are some of the highlights from last year’s births, so exciting to see healthy babies being born in Baseco!

Roselyn Espinosa had a gorgeous baby boy John Mark

He is pictured here with his  2 sisters, they actually care for this gorgeous baby boy as his mother was forced back into the workforce. She however breastfed for as long as possible and now his sisters bottle feed him. They are responsible girls and look after John well. But again this situation shows the enormous pressure these families are under.

Thank you Lighthouse for sponsoring this mum, birth and baby, he is certainly healthy and you had a great hand in that outcome!

Here is another Lighthouse success Mary Jane Caintoy’s baby was a 9lb boy, great hospital birth with no complications.

Another teen pregnancy Annalyn had a baby boy Daniel , yes she is in a relationship but she is still very young, but her baby was big and healthy!.

Just a beautiful photo of another baby happily breastfeeding, Emily Saler and her baby girl Rhea Mae born safely in hospital.

These are only a few of the many, have a peep on the Lighthouse Sponsor Page, I am sure this church will have such a reward in heaven…..looking after the little ones here on earth blesses those in heaven

Thanks Lighthouse

New Things…

When we visited Baseco and Don Boscoe in May we started a new initiative Body Awareness Classes. The main thrust of this programme was Teaching the girls about their body. We had about 40 girls attend. 20150502_140112

20150502_140052

We have been alarmed on numerous occasions by the simple lack of knowledge and sheer ignorance that girls and even child bearing women have….

Not that it is their fault, the doctors treat women as generally ignorant (which is unfortunately truth) but kept ignorant deliberately…

The teachers are embarrassed and very traditional in sex education classes, I have been told that the sex ed class consisted of simply chastisement if they do get pregnant. No knowledge, no information, no wisdom is imparted. Just embarrassment and confusion.

Many girls are too shy and confused to ask what is happening to their bodies and why.  Naturally they fall easily into situations that cause pregnancy and voilà a baby!

SO

Armed with some basic props and some great interpreters we began to tackle some priority issues including

  • Teaching them about their bits,  what is actually inside them
  • Teaching them the proper names for their organs, naming = power
  • Teaching the girls HOW a baby is concieved
  • Boys body parts and how they are made to make babies
  • Why they have periods
  • How a baby is born
  • How to stop babies being born, good decisions, personal safety, marriage, life partners.
  • Focusing on education, those who stay in school are less likely to have early pregnancies.

20150502_141819    20150502_142622

20150502_142643

It was a great success, the girls were animated, engaged and some even asked questions and became vocal about their body and what was evolving in them……

Yes a drop in the ocean, but if we can prevent one girl having one baby too early  we have won.

BBB can make a difference one girl at a time

This generation will be better off than the last!

I am defiant. Well God and I 🙂

Pregnancy and Delivery

  • This was a very exciting birth for BBB, we were actually there the day after her baby was born able to give her a postnatal check up and supply her with a postnatal Days for Girls Kit which she loved!
  • Her baby was a good size unable to get details as she delivered at home in a very quick manner
  • Her baby boy was born on Monday 4th of May
  • As with a lot of multiple deliveries she did not even realise she was in labour and was in too quick to move
  • Her husband gave me the honour of naming the baby…I called Him Joshua after my oldest Son! Why not he turned out great!
  • We visited with a Midwife on the BBB team who examined her and the baby and was very happy with her progress
  • Her husband is very supportive and is looking after the other children well.
  • He is also cooking and cleaning which apparently is a big thing!

Tiny house, separated by a thin wall from their InLaws, but an extremely neat and tidy clean little house.

Great family .

We also delivered a handmade Barossa quilt to this lovely mum!

The Tides of Change….

I have been back two weeks now in the beautiful Australia and the Barossa Valley.

Leaving Baseco is always bittersweet for me, I feel like I leave a bit of me behind with Pst Marivic and Marco, Pst Manny and Rolinda, Precy,  Allan, Rodellio, Riza, Liezel, Kat Kat, Irene their families are part of my heart……but of course my family is here back in Australia so my place is here. But I treasure my times in Baseco.

P1430404

My times with the mums, talking laughing and nursing babies………nothing thrills my soul when I see mothers growing learning and wanting to change.

The interesting thing about Baseco in 2013 is there seems to be a slight shift in the way the wind is blowing……

It is slight but I feel like it is HAPPENING.

Most ladies I talk to seem more tuned into Health, Eating Well, (schools now tell the same story) Birthing a Baby safely….even contraception/family planning has become almost acceptable, thanks to the tireless work of the women at Likahaan and the Lying in Centre…….I feel like I was not (for the first time) preaching a completely NEW message but one they had at least heard SOMETHING about before.

Did I repeat myself? YES

Did I find women who knew nothing? YES

Were there still little girls getting pregnant who still should be at school? YES

Did I find some tragedies? YES

But I did sense a change, NICE!!

Is it physical, spiritual, or political?

It could be all three, facilities are improving, fresh water and electricity nearly reaches the whole of Baseco now (thanks to Jn 14:12 and churches in Australia) , there are schools and a Heath Centre, drains are being built to drain the refuse away, roads, infrastructure and business is improving.

The Government has passed new laws pertaining to Women’s Health and Family Planning despite the resistance of the Catholic Church, it is now LEGAL to supply women with Contraception and discuss family planning. The Mayor who originally came from Baseco has bought about many many positive changes as well.

Yes, this is all true

But I really believe that through the preaching of the gospel and the subsequent blessings that follow (not just the work of Jn 14:12, but other evangelical churches in Baseco as well) the tide of devastating poverty and despair is being turned. As I was thinking about it it is like a massive ship turning in the sea…it cannot do it alone it needs to be shunted, shifted and tweaked and towed by the small but powerful tugboat, it is slowly being turned around…….

The giant ship moves, it changes direction and is set on a new course!

The gospel works!

There is no way I can now deny it. I have seen over 5 years the shift in Baseco……

Slight but real!

Not that there is still not a  long way to go, not that the work is finished.

But the tide is beginning to shift in my humble opinion.

I for one am glad and grateful that God came to Baseco.

My Birthing Better Babies will grow up in a different Baseco than that of their parents!

Jesus Christ through the Living Church has made a difference, He has changed the tide of death and destruction into hope and deliverance for those who want it!

New Friends in Baseco…..Likhaan

We have met new friends in Baseco……

I have been fairly committed and prayful about seeing some professional “legs” in Baseco, many many times help is needed when we (Mark, Christine especially) are not there. If BBB is to be truly effective there must be nationals that can impart to their own woman……we have found them!

In our old house we affectionately knew as White House, it has transformed and become known as Purple House…..it is now home to a NGO Family Planning organisation called Likhaan. There are midwives and community workers that live here permanently in Baseco, dedicated to women’s health and family planning. What a blessing!

Check out their website it is truly inspirational

Likhaan Website

This is also a very informative video by a person who met Likhaan workers and their work in Manila

These girls and women blessed my heart they have dedicated their lives to the lives of others, they are Chistians and now attend Jn14:12………

I will be blogging about them and their input in Baseco more in the future I just wanted you to meet them.

God is good, He provides all things in the right time!

Blessings Cathy

Some Victories……..

I am leaving to visit my second home in Manila Baseco tomorrow…….

I just felt to blog on the victories we have seen over the past two years!

So far Birthing Better Babies has sponsored over 45-50 full births

These babies are impressively bigger in birth weight, chubbier and  fatter and healthier

We can see significant differences between those born in the programme than not, this is probably due to Pregnancy Vitamins.

We have seen numerous women have successful Tubal Ligation Operations, these woman have all had multiple births and qualified by law to have the operation.

We have had a very successful Breastfeeding rate, with almost all if not all women are breastfeeding their babies for extended times. This is a real victory………

John Vincel and precious Liezel a leader in Jn 14:12 breastfeeding happily!

I am thrilled…………God is so good!

New Babies

I have a few more babies to show before I go to Mnaila this week and come back and completely revamp the website………………

Meet Joanne Juranta and her gorgeous baby John Gabriel

He weighed 3.9kg

This is her 5th baby

She actually went on to have a tubal ligatation

As more and more babies are sponsored we need a better way to “show” you all the stories

This is one thing I am going to do when I am there

Blessings in babies Cathy

NEWS

Some exciting news….I was just given a check for another 5 births from The Kiwanis in Barossa Valley SA

How exciting is that, it just seems to me people LOVE to give to the unborn and mothers of Baseco. I am truly grateful to them and God

What a way to end the first 6 months of this year………with more births than we have EVER had. How exciting and awe inspiring!

Blessings all!
